Tamar stared at the page in her chemistry textbook. She had read the page several times without absorbing a single word. Her thoughts kept returning to the attempted break-in at the shelter and Rusty. She was worried about him. Maybe she shouldn’t volunteer there if she was going to get so attached to the dogs.

When her sister stuck her head in half an hour later, Tamar was still attempting to read the same page.

“What’s up? You look out of it.”

Tamar closed the book. “Can’t seem to study. Mind keeps wondering.”

“Let me guess. The dog shelter.”

Tamar nodded.

“The dog or the guy?”

“The dog. And the break-in. And the guy.” She smiled. “I am not boy crazy like someone I know. I have priorities.”

“I gotta admit your community service project has turned out to be more interesting than anyone would have expected. How about I help out at the shelter with you tomorrow?”

“Don’t you have ‘study’ plans with Scott?”

“Nope. He’s going with his parents to some cousin’s wedding in Pennsylvania. Besides I want to meet that Jason guy you told me about.” She wriggled her eyebrows.
